Job Summary

The Director of Total Rewards is a strategic leader accountable for the strategy, design, execution, and continuous improvement of Camden’s employee benefits programs, including health and wellness plans, leave of absence programs, retirement and financial benefits, and other employee benefits and perks. This role also oversees payroll processing and worker’s compensation claim administration for corporate/regional offices and onsite property management teams. 

Camden’s Director of Total Rewards supports approximately 1,600 Camden employees across the United States and plays a key role in ensuring Camden provides robust benefits offerings and innovative rewards programs that foster engagement and retention. The successful candidate will possess a strategic mindset, demonstrated expertise in benefits and compliance, and the ability to champion initiatives that ensure benefits and payroll programs run efficiently and aligned with business objectives. 

Essential Functions

Strategy

  • Partner with leadership to shape Camden’s total rewards strategy and align with talent priorities and initiatives. Continuously evaluate our total rewards programs to ensure we remain competitive, legally compliant, and cost effective, resulting in positive business outcomes and benefits offerings that meet the diverse needs of our employees.
  • Use data analytics to assess and refine total rewards programs’ effectiveness, measure ROI, and improve decision-making and employee satisfaction.

Benefits Administration

  • Oversee benefits administration, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, supplemental benefits, and wellness programs, ensuring accessibility for all employees.
  • Responsible for all aspects of Camden’s leave of absence programs.
  • Oversee Camden’s worker’s compensation program. 
  • Manage retirement and financial benefits, including 401(k), Employee Share Purchase Plan (ESPP), and financial wellness initiatives.
  • Manage vendor relationships, renewals, RFP’s, plan designs, and program performance with benefits providers, consultants, brokers, and legal advisors to ensure regulatory compliance and competitive offerings.

Payroll Management

  • Oversee multi-state payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across corporate and onsite employees.
  • Implement best practices for payroll processing, including automation and payroll analytics to enhance payroll quality, efficiency, and internal controls, reducing errors and delays.
  • Direct payroll, timekeeping, and absence management software management, including strategic development, maintenance, and automation of processes.

Employee Engagement and Communication

  • Monitor the effectiveness of Camden’s total rewards programs through employee feedback, engagement surveys, and external benchmarking data.
  • Partner with Camden’s Director of HR Projects to develop communication strategies and plan events that effectively highlight total rewards programs, enhance awareness, and engage employees to maximize participation.

Compliance

  • Manage annual 401(k) audit and all compliance reporting, filings, and notices. 
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including FLSA, ERISA, ACA, ADA, and other regulatory requirements affecting payroll, benefits, and leave administration.
  • Stay well informed of evolving legislation (i.e., changes to paid family leave, sick leave, and payroll requirements).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in payroll, benefits, or total rewards leadership, including at least 5 years leading teams.
  • Strong leadership abilities, with a track record of building, managing, and developing high-performing teams focused on continuous improvement.
  • Expertise in benefits strategy, design, and administration.
  • Knowledge of retirement benefits, ESPP administration, and oversight of multistate payroll processing.
  • Knowledge of HRIS systems and benefits management tools. Experience with Oracle Payroll and Benefits modules and Fidelity PSW preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to excel in a constantly changing and fast-paced work environment.

  • Position requires periodic travel by automobile to handle work-related activities
  • May require airline travel, out-of-town and /or overnight trips 
  • Attendance and punctuality is essential for success in this position
  • Hazards can be minimized with proper lifting techniques, SDS, general safety training, and wearing appropriate PPE
