About the position
The Total Compensation Manager leads the design, execution, and continuous improvement of the total rewards strategy at Canadian North. This leadership role will be responsible for compensation, benefits, HR analytics, absence management and the effective utilization of HR systems and processes including UKG and other platforms to support data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency. Additionally, it will oversee the annual budgeting process within HR and play a critical role in managing the annual salary review cycle for non-bargaining employees. This individual will also be a key partner to the Director, Labour & Employee Relations in preparing for collective bargaining and in ensuring that programs and program management align with commitments made to our Union and Association partners.
The position requires deep technical expertise in total rewards, strong business acumen, and a passion for leveraging technology and analytics to drive continuous improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities
Job Evaluation & Compensation
- Lead the development and governance of job architecture, including job families, levels, and titling frameworks.
- Oversee job evaluations and market pricing to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness.
- Design, implement, and maintain competitive compensation programs that align with Canadian North’s strategic goals and market practices.
- Lead the development and management of salary structures, and incentive plans
- Oversee the annual compensation review process for non-bargaining employees, including merit increases, bonus planning, and related communications.
- Lead organizational efforts to maintain ongoing compliance with Pay Equity obligations, while also ensuring integrity of broader compensation systems including appropriate relativities through system design.
- Partner with other HR functions and Finance to support compensation decisions tied to promotions, new hires, and organizational changes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant compensation laws and regulations, including pay equity and transparency requirements.

- Lead the annual benefits renewal and open enrollment process in collaboration with brokers and external providers.
- Develop and deliver employee education and awareness initiatives to enhance understanding and effective utilization of available benefits.
- Monitor program utilization, employee feedback and industry trends to identify opportunities for enhancement or cost optimization.
- Maintain effective and compliant benefits-related processes and workflows, leveraging HR technology (e.g., UKG) to support accuracy, efficiency, and reporting.
- Ensure compliance with relevant federal and provincial legislation (e.g., Human Rights Codes, Canada Labour Code, EI, CPP, and applicable health and safety requirements).
Analytics & Reporting
- Manage the development and maintenance of dashboards and reporting tools to provide actionable insights across total compensation & benefits data.
- Ensure ongoing, strategic reporting for Executive leadership and the HR Department leadership team.
- Conduct regular and ad hoc analysis to support strategic decision-making and identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Collaborate with Finance and HR leadership to model compensation and benefits costs and forecast workforce expenses.
- Lead the maintenance, and continuous improvement of the HR/People Management functionality within the UKG system, ensuring alignment with business needs and HR processes
- Ensure data accuracy and integrity across UKG modules and leverage system capabilities to enhance reporting, compliance, and overall HR operational efficiency.
Strategic Projects & Initiatives
- Develop and lead the framework for tracking, reporting, and evaluating HR strategic initiatives, ensuring visibility into project status and alignment with broader business goals.
- Facilitate quarterly project review sessions with the HR leadership team to assess progress, identify risks, and drive accountability across key initiatives.
- Coordinate and support the execution of cross-functional HR projects including technology implementations, process improvements, and organizational effectiveness efforts by partnering with internal stakeholders to ensure timely and effective delivery.
Budget Planning & Cost Modelling
- Lead the HR Department’s annual budgeting process and cost modeling.
- Track and manage departmental budget performance throughout the year in partnership with Finance.
- Provide leadership and oversight for organizational modeling, and labor cost analysis.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a key advisor to the Chief People Officer and senior leadership on total rewards strategy
- Partner with other HR Leaders, Talent Acquisition, Labour Relations and Finance to deliver aligned, business-focused solutions that comply with commitments under collective agreements.
- Build and develop a high-performing team fostering a culture of strategic thinking, accountability, innovation, customer service and collaboration.
Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.

CHRP, CHRL, or CEBS certification is considered a strong asset

Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in total compensation and benefits, including at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial capacity.
- Strong understanding of Canadian compensation and benefits legislation, including compliance with provincial employment standards, pay equity, and tax regulations.
- Proven experience managing the annual compensation cycle, including salary review, incentive programs, and market benchmarking within the Canadian market.
- Familiarity with Canadian benefits practices, including group insurance, retirement savings programs (e.g., RRSP, DPSP), and wellness initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to manage HR analytics, and budgeting processes.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with proficiency in Excel and HRIS systems (e.g., Workday, SAP, or equivalent).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to advise, influence, and collaborate across all levels of the organization.
- Experience leading strategic projects or initiatives within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to obtain an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card as per Transport Canada regulations
- Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
