Compensation Specialist

Primary Purpose:

Serve as a key member of the Business Services team, responsible for supporting the district’s workers’ compensation program by handling claims, communicating with stakeholders, and maintaining compliance with Texas Workers’ Compensation laws. Work under the direction of the Director of Risk Management to ensure timely and accurate processing of injury reports and claims.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree in a related field from accredited university preferred

Certified Workers' Compensation Professional (CWCP) designation preferred

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Basic knowledge of Texas Workers’ Compensation laws and procedures

Understanding of medical terminology related to workplace injuries

Strong communication and organizational skills

Ability to handle confidential information Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace F

amiliarity with workers’ compensation software preferred

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

Ability to oversee and process workers' compensation claims

Ability to effectively communicate with employees, supervisors, and medical providers

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

 

Experience:

Minimum of two years of experience in workers' compensation, preferably in a public sector or educational setting

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Claims Support and Processing

1.  Assist with intake, documentation, and processing of workers’ compensation claims.

2.  Help investigate reported employee injuries and gather required information.

3.  Enter and update claim data in relevant systems or software. T

4.  Track claim progress and follow up on pending documentation.

 

Employee and Stakeholder Communication

5. Act as a point of contact for injured employees regarding claim procedures and medical appointments.

6. Communicate with supervisors, medical providers, insurance carriers, and attorneys as directed.

7. Provide updates to employees and respond to routine inquiries about claims.

 

Documentation and Reporting

8. Maintain accurate records of all claims and related documentation.

9. Assist with preparation of required state reports and submissions to the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation.

10. Organize and file paperwork in accordance with district policies and retention schedules.

 

Safety and Training Support

11. Support risk management staff in promoting workplace safety initiatives.

12. Assist with scheduling and coordinating safety training sessions for employees.

13. Help distribute educational materials related to injury prevention and workers’ compensation policies

 

Compliance and Administrative Duties

14. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and district policies.

15. Maintain confidentiality of employee health and claim information.

16. Stay informed of changes in workers' compensation laws that impact district operations

 

Other

17. Stay current on changes in workers' compensation laws and regulations.

18. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

19. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds) Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district-wide travel; may work outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather). Exposure to dust and chemicals.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress. Ability to be available and on call seven days a week.
